Hiking
With vast natural areas relatively untouched, the Fish Eagle hiking trail on our farm offers the ideal way to explore and see some of the Cape’s finest examples of rare fauna and flora. The 7.5km biodiversity trail features informative signage.
With the eight kilometres of river frontage running through the family-owned property alone, one of the truly remarkable experiences you can enjoy include hearing the call of fish eagles. The local bird club visits the area and up to 92 species have been spotted during a single morning – the most ever in the Breede River Valley.
The Fish Eagle hiking trail starts on the estate and takes visitors along the river, as well as through the various veld types found here.
An extremely rare feature on the farm is a special rock formation shaped some 1.3 million years ago, only found on this farm near the town of Sutherland. The Goedemoed (or Klaasvoogds) Olive Melilitite intrusion forms a conspicuous dark triangle on the Elandsberg hill south of the Van Loveren cellar. This marks where molten magma rose from deep within the earth. When it was blocked from eruption as a volcano, the magma cooled to form the pipe formation.

Bird Watching
Birding is a perfect hobby for families to enjoy together. It is a means to get people away from their devices, into nature and enjoying an activity with a common goal.
Our Fish Eagle Hiking Trail boasts an enormous number of birds for its size. Due to our involvement with BWI (Biodiversity and Wine Initiative), we have attempted to farm with as low impact on the environment as possible. As many as 100 bird species can be spotted in a day along our safe and peaceful birding route.
Senior citizens will find the walk easy-going as there are no obstructions or steep inclines. The section of the path along the Breede River is shaded by tall blue-gum trees and is pleasantly cool, even in warm weather. The summer months are best for bird-watching.
You will need to purchase a permit to use the trail and sign an indemnity form, but you can do that upon arrival or via our website.
Day permit includes a Free Cappuccino at Christina's Bistro after your walk. Show your permit to claim your free coffee.
